TOXICOLOGIC PATHOLOGY OF THE HEMATOPOIETIC SYSTEM
The hematopoietic system embodies the convergence of anatomic and clinical pathology specialties and promotes a multidisciplinary approach to assessing disease mechanisms. The aim of the 2020 Society of Toxicologic Pathology Annual Symposium is to converge clinical and anatomic pathology aspects of the hematopoietic system and to expose attendees to a broad array of contemporary topics related to toxicologic pathology of the hematopoietic system. The symposium will kick-off on Monday, June 15, with a Keynote presentation by the world-renowned Dr. Cynthia Dunbar, head of the Molecular Hematopoiesis Section of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. The Keynote presentation will be followed by the Monday morning session on bone marrow structure, function and cell biology that will include bone marrow fundamentals, as well as emerging topics on bone marrow physiology and microenvironment as it relates to the nervous system and one’s lifestyle choices. The Monday afternoon session will cover methodologies and emerging technologies for the evaluation of the hematopoietic system, including updates on the evaluation of circulating blood cells and presentations regarding intravital microscopy and lineage tracking by hematopoietic stem cell barcoding. The Tuesday morning session will focus on understanding the mechanisms of decreased erythropoiesis and erythroid cell injury and will include presentations regarding anemias caused from gene mutations or the administration of therapeutics. The Wednesday morning session will be devoted to the hemostatic system with presentations discussing pro- and anti-coagulants, platelet biology, hemorrhagic events in treated leukemic patients, hemophilia B, and assessment of prothrombotic states. The Wednesday afternoon session will address off-target effects and idiosyncratic hematologic effects in toxicology studies with an overview of mechanisms, a talk dedicated to off-target effects in neutrophils and several case presentations. The symposium will conclude with a Thursday morning session focused on hematopoietic neoplasms and clonal diseases in the setting of drug development. Talks will include fundamentals on the classification and animal models of hematopoietic neoplasms, the role of long non-coding RNA in hematopoietic malignancies, and cancer risk associated with the drug development of immunomodulators. On Saturday, June 13, in advance of the STP Annual Symposium, the ever-popular NTP Satellite Symposium, entitled Pathology Potpourri, will focus on presentations of challenging pathologic lesions and on Sunday, four different continuing education sessions will be offered. Additionally, Monday evening will offer a hematopoietic mystery slide session. We hope you will join us for this exciting program in the beautiful state of Nevada!
